Blosser examines the use of cholinergic drugs to help treat Alzheimer's disease. "[C]holinergic neurons in cortical and subcortical brain regions responsible for memory and related cognitive functions are destroyed early in the disease process," explains Blosser. And, he continues, "These neurons normally produce and release acetylcholine, a major excitatory neurotransmitter which is also dramatically reduced in AD."
