Gastric Mucosa Protection by Phosphatidylcholine (PC) (2005-07-14) [PDF]
Author: Dr. M. Ghyczy, E. Hoff, J. Gareiss
In the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract (GI) endogenous PC is part of the lining of the mucosa. In the lower part PC and bile salts emulsify fat by forming chylomicrons and enable absorption. The importance of the intact lining was demonstrated by experiments, where the bile acid caused dissolution of the PC in the lining, causing mucosal bleeding in the rats [1]. After the oral application of radioactive labelled PC to the rats, audiographic graphs demonstrated the coverage of GI by exogenous PC. These results justified the evaluation of the gastroprotective effect of PC in vivo.
